Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has alleged that it was because of the failures of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the social networking site Twitter chose Ghana to set up its Africa headquarter instead of Nigeria.
According to the PDP, no one will come to invest in Nigeria, given the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to address a number of issues, including insecurity, power shortages and rampant corruption.
The PDP says the company should have opened its headquarter in Nigeria because no other country in Africa has as many users as Nigeria, but due to the APC government’s failure to provide security and electricity, it opted for Ghana, ahead of Nigeria.
Senator Umar Ibrahim Tsauri, the party’s national secretary, told the BBC: “There is no system in Nigeria, no electricity, no security, our economy is not working under this government.” he said.
He added that even the growing corruption problem in this administration is discouraging foreign investors and investors from coming to the country to invest and open up businesses.
Many Nigerians believe that Twitter’s decision is bad for the continent’s largest economy, which benefits the company more than any other country in Africa.
A survey by Nigerian opinion polling firm, NOI Polls found that 39.6 million Nigerians have a Twitter account, more than the total population of Ghana.
In a statement announcing its decision, Twitter described Ghana as “as a champion for democracy, a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.”.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo said, “Choosing Ghana as the headquarters for Twitter operations in Africa is a very good news.” He described the relationship as a good partnership between Ghana and Twitter.
