One Killed As Gunmen Attack Travellers In Ekiti

One person has been killed and several missing as gunmen attack travellers along Ikere-Ekiti-Iju road on Saturday evening.

Speaking to newsmen on Sunday, spokesman of the Police Command in Ekiti, Sunday Abutu, said the gunmen attacked the bus between Ikere-Ekiti and Iju, a border town in Ondo State.

Abutu said the driver fled with the vehicle to Ilupeju-Ikere Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti to report the incident.

The state PPRO, however, stated that the police have launched a manhunt to arrest the gunmen and locate the missing passengers, adding that a discreet investigation has also begun to unravel the incident.

He said: “The driver accounted that he was brave enough to have speedily escaped with his passengers from the scene but in the process, one of the passengers was unfortunately hit by a bullet and was rushed to General Hospital, Ikere-Ekiti where he later died

“The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police implores everyone in the State not to panic as the Command shall join force with Ondo State Police Command to ensure that the perpetrators are made to face the full wrath of the law.”

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government on Sunday disclosed that it is working effortlessly to secure the release of the 39 students abducted from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, in the Igabi Local Government Area.

Recall that the bandits that abducted 23 females and 16 males in a video had requested the sum of N500 million as a ransom to release the students.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in the state, Samuel Aruwan, commend the security agencies for the rescue of 180 students of the college.

He noted that the action of the military, police, DSS and other security agencies prevent the bandits from abducting more persons.

“The Kaduna State Government maintains a clear focus at this time, and that is to ensure the safe return of the missing students and to consolidate intelligence gathering and security vigilance towards forestalling possible attempts on other facilities or institutions,” he said.
