PDP To Stick With Its Name For 2023 Election
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a final decision on calls for it to change its name ahead of the 2023 elections in Nigeria.
The decision is coming amidst calls for a change of name as part of re-strategizing for the next general elections in the country.
It will be recalled that Doyin Okupe, a former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan had been championing a cause for the party’s change of name.
Some stakeholders also agreed with Okupe’s position that a change of name might help PDP attract voters and remain dominant in the election.
However, the spokesman for PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, has stated categorically that the party is not considering a change of name in the immediate future.
He noted that the decision was part of conclusions reached at the party’s 88th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, yesterday.
“The party insists that the PDP brand is still the best in the political firmament of our nation and as such, those canvassing for a change of name should forget it because we remain the Peoples Democratic Party,” he told newsmen.
Ologbondiyan added that the party has also constituted a committee to review the conduct of the 2019 general elections to unravel what transpired during the polls and guide the PDP in pushing for electoral reforms ahead of the 2023 general elections.
