At Least Three Dead In A Collapsed Building In Nairobi

At least three people have been killed in the collapse of a residential building in Nairobi, and many are still locked up in the rubble, a Kenyan administrative source said.

The incident occurred in a six-story building located on the Tassia housing estate in Embakasi, a densely populated area near Nairobi International Airport.

A senior Nairobi County official, Wilson Njenga, told the press that three people had been killed and 21 rescued.

Research continued late in the afternoon, with specialized teams, but also volunteers to help to search the rubble.

The building had 57 units, but the number of people present at the time of the incident is not known.

Several buildings have collapsed in recent years in Nairobi and other cities in Kenya, a rapidly expanding real estate market.

The quality of materials and all-out constructions are regularly questioned, as well as the ability of unscrupulous promoters to circumvent the regulation through bribes.

In September, seven students from a Nairobi primary school were killed and dozens wounded in the collapse of their classrooms, an accident attributed to the poor quality of construction.

In April 2016, 49 people were killed in the collapse of a six-storey building in a poor neighbourhood in the north-east of the capital.
