Gunmen Razes Another Imo Police Station, Release Detainees

Gunmen on Tuesday attacked the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo State.

It was learned that the unknown gunmen invaded the police station, released suspects in detention, before setting the building on fire.

The gunmen were said to have operated without any resistance from security agencies in the area or in the state.

This latest attack happened a few hours after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, and outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu left the State.

They were in the state to inspect the level of damage on the burnt security facilities in the state.

Naija News recalls that gunmen had attacked the Federal Correctional Centre and the State Police Headquarters in Owerri on Monday.

Some inmates were freed when gunmen attacked the correctional centre, while buildings and vehicles were razed when the police headquarters was invaded.

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) had said over 1,800 inmates escaped from custody, while the police accused members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being behind the attacks.

However, IPOB in a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, has denied any involvement in the dastardly act.

Meanwhile, gunmen on Tuesday attacked a police station in Ebonyi State but were repelled by operatives from the Ebonyi Police Command.

It was gathered that one of the gunmen was killed during the shoot-out with the police. Similarly, a police officer was injured during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The Ugbodo Police station located in Ebonyi local government area of the state was the one attacked according to a top security source who spoke to The Nation about the incident.

The source added that the gunmen launched the attack around 2am on Tuesday.

“But they met stiff resistance from the policemen at the station. In the ensuing battle, a Police officer sustained an injury while the gunmen later retreated with some of them being hit by the bullets from the Police.

“In the morning, the police went on a search of the bushes in the area and discovered the corpse of one of the gunmen,” the source said.
