Fulani Herdsmen Reportedly Kills 100 In Benue

Fulani Herdsmen have reportedly killed 100 persons in six Local Government Areas in Benue State, North-central Nigeria.

Naija News reports that this was made known by the Special Adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom on Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ken Achabo.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi, Achabo also raised the alarm that armed herdsmen had occupied some parts of the LGAs, grazing, destroying farmlands and harvested crops.

He named the councils as Gwer West, Guma, Makurdi, Logo, kwande and Agatu.

He also described the call by Governor Bala Muhammed of Bauchi State for everyone to be allowed to bear arms as an “invitation to anarchy. ”

Achaba appealed to the people to remain calm as Ortom was determined to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, Governor Mohammed has clarified comments he made justifying Fulani herdsmen carrying Ak-47 rifles for self-defence.

Mohammed said the primary objective of his comment was to avert the dangerous prospect of a nation-wide backlash and generalization of the Fulani clan as criminals.

He stated that his reference to AK47 was simply to put in perspective the predicament and desperation of those law-abiding Fulani herdsmen who, while carrying out their legitimate cow-rearing business, have become serial victims of cattle rustling, banditry, kidnapping and assassination.

The Bauchi governor said these were the people who, in the absence of any protection from the security agencies, are forced to resort to self-help, to defend both their means of livelihood and their lives.
