Police Commissioner, Govt Delegation Visit Igangan

The Oyo Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, and a state government delegation on Sunday visited Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area (LGA) to resolve the crisis between herders and residents.

In a statement released by the spokesman of the Oyo state police command, Olugbenga Fadeyi, the team visited the town following the attack on a Fulani settlement in the town.

Naija News recalls that Sunday Igboho, stormed the area with his supporters, following the expiration of the seven-day eviction notice he had earlier issued to the herdsmen.

Some youths had also set ablaze some buildings and cars, including those belonging to Saliu Abdulkadir, Seriki Fulani of Oyo, demanding that he and other herdsmen vacate the area.

According to Fadeyi, relative calm and peace have been restored in the area and that the security situation is in no way compromised.

“Yes, the CP and management team with the team from the government house led by the SA security are present here in Igangan to broker peace between the Fulani and Igangan people,” Fadeyi said.

“Yes, there is relative peace by all and sundry, while the security here is not threatened in any way.”

This new platform had reported that the Oyo State Police Commissioner, Ngozi Onadeko has blamed Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho for the recent violence in Igangan, Oyo State.

Onadeko noted that the actions of Sunday Igboho led to the recent clashes between Fulani herdsmen in the area and the host community of Igangan.

She however warned that nobody will be allowed to cause further breakdown of law and order while an investigation has been launched to determine details of the Igangan incident and bring perpetrators to justice.

“Following the fear of threats to public peace, occasioned by the inciting pronouncement of Chief Sunday Adeniyi, A.K.A Sunday Igboho, the Oyo State Police Command jointly with Operation Burst had embarked on visibility/confidence building patrol of the areas concerned.

“Sadly, the relative peace and calmness, being enjoyed, due to the visibility patrols of the Security Agencies were truncated by the visit of Sunday Igboho to Igangan, at about 1630hrs on 22nd January 2021.

“The visit had culminated in a mob action by some youths in the town, who, armed with different types of weapons, embarked on arson and a breach of peace. In the process, grievous hurt was committed against one of the Police Officers, while discharging his statutory duties” the CP said.
