The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has rated the Nigerian Police officers as the best in the world.
In an interview on a Channels Television programme on Monday, Adamu said his officers will perform better than their foreign counterparts when given the right logistics to work.
He noted that despite the lack of enough resources for them to perform their duties, Nigerian policemen still keep the peace in the country very well.
Adamu, however, asked the federal government, state governments, and private individuals to support the Nigerian police to enable them function effectively.
He said: “When you have police as an organisation that is supposed to fight crime, to maintain law and order, the personnel of that organisation must be properly trained, must be properly equipped, must be given the necessary tools required for them to perform the functions for which they are recruited.
“It is only in Nigeria that you have police officers that don’t have the required logistics that they need to operate, but they struggle and make the society peaceful.
“When you take them out of the country, to an international environment where those logistics that are required for you to do policing job are there, you see them performing wonderfully well. And that’s why Nigerian police officers are acclaimed to be the best in the world.
“Put Nigerian police officers side by side with even police officers from advanced countries; give them the same function; give them the same logistics; you’ll see the officers of the Nigerian police perform better than those that are coming from so-called advanced countries.
“I’m an example. A lot of police officers from those advanced countries worked under me and I directed them on what policing is and what should come out of them.”
Speaking further, Adamu said that the youths who participated in the #EndSARS protest want to join the Nigeria Police Force.
The #EndSARS protest which occurred in October 2020 saw youths take to the streets across the country to demand an end to police brutality and bad governance.
He said, “The youths who participated in the #EndSARS and the rest of them, many of them want to join the police.
“Many of them will come and say, ‘Please, we want to join the police,’ because the service the police provide is a service of God.”
On hospitals requesting police reports before they attend to victims of gunshot wounds, Mohammed advised them to save lives first before any other thought.
“Save life first… lives must be saved first before thinking of any other thing to do…there is no issue of asking for any police report before you treat anybody with gunshot wounds,” he said.
