The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has berated some Nigerian politicians over their reaction to the abduction of 333 students of the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina.
Naija News recalls that the abducted students were on Thursday, December 17, 2020, released by their captors after negotiations aided by Miyetti Allah and repentant bandits.
Before the rescue of the students, some protesters took to the streets in different parts of the country to demand that the government secure the release of the schoolboys while #BringBackOurBoys was trending on social media.
Also, the chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, led the #BringBackOurBoys protest in Abuja.
Speaking on Good Morning Nigeria, a programme on the Nigeria Television Authority, on Saturday, Mohammed said there is something wrong with some Nigerian politicians.
He pointed out that politicians are supposed to come together to seek a solution when the country is faced with a challenge.
Lai Mohammed said: “In my press conference yesterday, I said in a time of crisis or tragedy, people normally come together to address that issue. It is not a time to politicise, trade or commercialise the misery or tragedy of a whole nation.
“And I am not proud to be lumped together in the same class as those who claim to be politicians because those are not real politicians. Yes, we can have our differences but when it comes to issues like Kankara, we should come together and resolve it. Some political parties actually came to Abuja and you know, they had already made vests, banners, parading the streets.
“So honestly, there is something not quite right with some of our politicians.”
Speaking at a press conference on Friday on the release of the students, Lai Mohammed also slammed reactions to the abduction of the boys.
“The reactions in certain quarters to the Kankara incident was shameful. Some Nigerians went as far as denigrating their government and country in the most uncouth and irresponsible manner.”
“They simply threw decorum to the wind and allowed their emotions to take a better part of them. We hope the naysayers have learnt their lessons.”
“And we hope those who have started trading and politicking with the hashtag ‘BringBackOurBoys’ can now go home…”
