The House of Representatives has revealed that the nationwide #EndSARS campaign which started in October 2020, contributed to the enforcement of SIM registration and NIN linking policy.
According to the Nigerian lawmakers on Wednesday, December 16, it was forced to invite the National Communications Commission after strange individuals began calling and messaging public officeholders during the campaign against police brutality.
The lower chamber of the National Assembly stated that the identities of the owners of the mobile numbers could not be ascertained as the Subscriber Identification Module cards used were not registered.
It could be recalled that Telecommunications operators in Nigeria were issued two weeks ultimatum to shut out all Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards that are not linked with the National Identity Numbers (NIN). The Nigerian Communications Commission threatened to withdraw the license of any telecom company that shunned its directives.
However, the House of Representatives on Wednesday, December 16 call for the extension of the deadline for the NIN linking to SIM cards.
Naija News understands that the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu during plenary, raised a motion of urgent public importance to delay the earlier announced move to February 2021.
