Northern Elders Insists Buhari Must Sack Service Chief

Northern elders have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack Nigeria’s service chiefs as the country’s security situation takes a turn for the worse.

Naija News reports that HRH Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, while speaking at the fourth quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), lamented the increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the Northern region of the country.

The Sultan of Sokoto who expressed deep concerns noted that issues of kidnap and banditry have now gone beyond the highways as the criminals now boldly move from house to house to abduct their victims.

He said the situation is now so worrisome that the criminals openly move about with AK-47 guns almost unchallenged by security operatives, adding that the North is now the worst place to live in Nigeria due to the collapsed security system and the increasing cost of living.

Reacting, the Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Zana Goni; and its women leader, Mario Bichi, commended the Sultan for speaking up on the worsening security situation in the north.

The group stated that Nigeria’s insecurity was largely responsible for the food crisis in the country.

According to the Northern elders, the Sultan vindicated their consistent alarm on the state of insecurity in the region.

They urged President Buhari to appoint young innovative officers to head the nation’s security architecture.

The CNEPD said, “We most respectfully commend the Sultan of Sokoto, our father, for stating the true position of things in the North, as it concerns insecurity. We have said the state of insecurity has reached a point where our farmers can hardly access their farms, even as travellers on busy highways can no longer guarantee their safe arrival without being kidnapped.”

Recall that Boko Haram Terrorist group on Saturday beheaded 43 farmers in Zabarmari, less than 20 km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Zambarmari is located in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State.

It was also gathered that the bodies of the slain farmers whose throats were also slit is still been kept by residents of the area who are insisting they won’t be buried until the state governor, Professor Babagana Zulum sees their bodies.
