1. FG Shifts Resumption Of International Flights To September 5
President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has announced the postponement of the resumption of international flights till September 5th, 2020.
Recall that the Federal Government had earlier announced that international flights would commence operations on August 29th, 2020 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
Information gathered revealed that resumption date was shifted with a week to allow the government provide logistics and perfect COVID-19 preventive strategies at entry ports into the country.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Musa Shuaibu Nuh, revealed the news during a Presidential Task Force COVID-19 briefing in Abuja.
2. Buhari Sacks Amnesty Boss Dokubo, Names Interim Replacement
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday sacked Professor Charles Dokubo as the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.
He has also approved the appointment of Col. Milland Dikio (retd.), as the interim administrator of the programme.
The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made this known in a statement on Thursday.
The statement was titled, ‘President Buhari appoints Col. Dikio (retd.) Interim Amnesty Programme administrator, disengages Prof. Dokubo as coordinator.’
According to a statement, Dikio’s appointment took effect from August 21, 2020.
3. Why Nigeria Is Bankrupt – Former CBN Deputy Gov.
A former presidential candidate, Kingsley Moghalu has noted that the only reason why Nigeria is bankrupt is because its leadership and politics are a “grand fraud”.
According to him , the country’s problem isn’t the lack of brilliant minds but a lack of strong and effective institutions.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) at least 82.9 million Nigerian are living in poverty.
Moghalu took to his Twitter handle to write that it is only strong economic institutions that can provide the needed opportunity for wealth creation in Nigeria.
4. 2023: We Will Support Competence Over Zoning – Arewa Youth President
Alhaji Yerima Shettima, president of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF)has declared that Nigeria should consider competence ahead of zoning in the 2023 presidential election.
Shettima declared that the country should be ready to move away from the practice where a small group of people or politicians decide which zone leaders will emerge from.
He added that the citizens of Nigeria should be allowed to express their free will in choosing their own leaders rather than been boxed into a corner by certain ‘gentleman agreement’ by political parties.
Shettima, who was quoted by Daily Trust to have spoken during a chat with journalists in Lagos on the sidelines of a summit of leaders of ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, has also declared support for competence ahead of zoning.
5. Adesina Elected AFDB President For The Second Time
The Africa Development Bank, AfDB, has once again re-elected Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina as it’s President for another term.
Adesina, a former Nigerian Minister of Agriculture was elected on Thursday during the extraordinary meeting of bank holding in Cote d’ivoire.
Adesina was first elected as AfDB President in 2015.
6. I Am Tempted To Drop Biafra Struggle – IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu Cries Out
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has disclosed that there are times he gets so overwhelmed and feels like dropping the agitation for Biafra.
The IPOB leader made the declaration in a letter to his members where he reacted to the alleged killing of some IPOB members on Sunday by security operatives at Emene in Enugu state.
He compared himself to the biblical Jesus Christ who asked that if possible, the ‘cup’ of dying on the cross should pass over him.
Kanu, however, added that despite the struggles and temptations, he remains committed to the actualization of a sovereign Biafra, noting that the death of those who lost their lives in the struggle must not be allowed to be in vain.
7. Boko Haram: Mailafia Reveals What Will Stop Him From Exposing More Secrets
Dr. Obadiah Mailafia has stated that he would only stop revealing more secrets when killings across Nigeria becomes a thing of the past.
Mailafia, who is also a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been in the limelight recently over his claims that a northern governor is the commander of the Boko Haram terrorist group.
This he stated during an interview with a private radio station in the country. His claims led to grilling on two different occasions by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, the former boss of theNational Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) stated that he will tone down when the killings stop.
8. What We Will Do To States Using COVID-19 As Excuse To Sack Workers – NLC
Comrade Ayuba Wabba, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has vowed to deal with states using the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as an excuse to sack workers.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja before the commencement of the Central Working Committee meeting of the NLC on Wednesday, the NLC president said labour was already mobilising against state governments and other employers using the COVID-19 undermine the rights of workers.
Wabba accused government and employers of using workers as scapegoats for the economic challenges brought about by the pandemic.
9. Suspect Narrates How He Was Paid N1m To Kill UNIBEN Student Inside RCCG Church
One of the suspects involved in the rape and eventual death of Uwaila Vera Omozua, a UNIBEN undergraduate student who was attacked while reading inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) parish in Edo State has confessed that he got N1 million for his role in the crime.
The suspect, identified as Collins Uligbe, narrated that he was given the money by his landlady, Mrs. Mary Ade to carry out the act.
He stated this while being paraded alongside other suspects in the case by the Edo State Police Command.
However, the landlady, Mary Ade, has denied the allegation against her, saying she neither gave him the money nor asked him to wipe the lady’s private part.
10. 2023: Osinbajo Speaks On Taking Up Presidential Sit
Yemi Osinbajo, Vice-President has noted that he is more interested in serving Nigeria and not about the presidential election in 2023.
With ongoing talks about shifting powers in 2023 to the Southern part of Nigeria, there are rumour that the vice-president has been in the picture as one of those who could succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, Osinbajo who spoke with members at the virtual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said his attention is on burning issues that need to be addressed not on the 2023 elections.
