1. JAMB Announces New Date To Start 2020 Admission Exercise, Post-UTME Screening

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new date for the commencement of the 2020/2021 post- Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede announced on Monday afternoon that the 2020/2021 post- Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination screening will begin on September 7.

This was announced at the end of the meeting between JAMB and heads of all tertiary institutions in the country.

2. FG Says No Nigerian Died In Beirut Explosion

No Nigerian were among those who died in the August 4 explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, which claimed over 150 lives and injured hundreds of others, Federal Government has announced.

This was made known in a statement on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

The Ministry further commiserated with the Lebanese government over the tragedy.

3. Tanker Drivers Suspend Strike

Tanker drivers have suspended their industrial action in Lagos.

Recall last week, there were fears that Lagosians may experience fuel scarcity soon, following a directive by the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) that Petroleum tanker drivers should withdraw their services from Lagos from Monday.

4. FG Announces New Support Scheme For Nigerians

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it is launching a new support scheme for Nigerians that will make funds available for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

This was confirmed in a tweet from the official twitter account of the federal government on Monday, 10th August, and also retweeted by the presidency.

The scheme according to the government statement, will make support available to save jobs and sustain local production.

5. WAEC: What Will Happen To Centres That Fail To Meet COVID-19 Protocols – Official

The West African Examinations Council on Monday promised that it will observe all the guidelines put in place to curtail the spread of Coronavirus among students and it’s staff during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The head of the examination council in Nigeria, Patrick Areghan, revealed this during an interview with Premium Times.

He said WAEC “would not risk the life of anybody.” He said any centre that fails to meet the standard required for the safe conduct of the examination would be reported to the appropriate authorities for sanction.

6. 22 Political Parties Win Appeal Court Battle Against De-registration By INEC

The decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to de-register some political parties in Nigeria has been overruled by the Court of Appeal.

The Appellate Court sitting in Abuja on Monday decided that the de-registration of 22 out of the 74 deregistered political parties by INEC did not follow due process.

It also by its ruling, upturned an earlier judgment by a Federal High Court that upheld INEC’s actions.

7. Ondo Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi Officially Dumps PDP

The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just 7 weeks after initially joining the party from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Agboola’s defection from the PDP was confirmed in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Allen Sowore.

The statement noted that the decision to dump the PDP is based on the need to respond to his people’s call to contest the 2020 governorship election in Edo State.

8. Buhari Signs Fresh Agreement To Enhance The Implementation Of African Trade Insurance Agency

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the instrument of accession of the agreement for the establishment of the African Trade Insurance Agency.

Naija News learnt that the new agreement was made known on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The Agreement and the Agency are registered with the Secretariat of the United Nations in accordance with Charter of the United Nations and is in cognizance of the fact that lack of adequate political, non-commercial and commercial risk insurance is a significant impediment to the availability of finance for investments in Africa and the expansion of African foreign trade and intra-Africa trade.

9. NDDC Writes IG, Demands Prosecution Of Failed Contractors

The acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Kemebradikumo Pondei, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, calling for the arrest and prosecution of contractors, who refused to execute contracts that they were paid for.

The NDDC MD signed the petition, dated July 29, 2020.

Pondei in the letter forwarded to the IG reminded him about some documents relating to the alleged contract scam in the agency, currently being handled by the police department of operations.

10. 10 Senators Who Have Spent A Year In The Senate Without Presenting A Single Bill

Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan and former Governor of Kano, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano), are among a list of 10 senators who have spent a year without sponsoring a single bill according to this report compiled by Daily Trust.

Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution as amended states that the responsibility of The National Assembly is “to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation or any part thereof with respect to any matter included in the Exclusive Legislative List”.

The primary responsibility of a legislator includes making laws on issues of public interest; representing the interest of citizens; and oversight of government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
