The United Nations, UN, has stated on its official website yesterday that Nigeria is now free of the Poliovirus.
According to the report, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Margaret Chan announced the development on Thursday, June 18.
The health organisation noted that the long time devastating virus currently exists in only two countries. It boasts that the world at large is close to sending the disease into extinction.
Naija News understands that the achievement was accredited to Nigeria following documentation forwarded to the African Regional Certification Commission for polio eradication.
Speaking on Nigeria’s status on Polio disease, Chan said, “The outstanding commitment and efforts that got Nigeria off the endemic list must continue, to keep Africa polio-free. We must now support the efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan so they soon join the polio-free world.”
On his part, the Director of Media in the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Mohammed Ohitoto, expressed his gratitude towards the development, noting that it was a relieving report at this time to the country.
Meanwhile, Nigeria on Thursday, June 18 recorded 745 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19).
The development was revealed in a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.
