COVID-19: Kano State Government Nullifies Almajiri System Of Education

Almajiri System of Education is one of the oldest traditions in the northern region. However, due to its negative impact on the development of the region the governors have agreed to abolish the system.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has taken a bold step and abolished the Almajiri system of education in the state, after more children test positive to COVID-19.

Naija News Understands that the Governor of the State Abdulahi Ganduje, made this known at a media briefing in Kano, as he insisted that the system of Almajiri system has been totally abolished in the state.

This is coming after the state government revealed that 28 out of the repatriated Almajiri children to the state tested positive to the highly contagious Coronavirus disease and have been quarantined at the isolation centre for necessary medications.

The governor explained that if an Almajiri system would be allowed in Kano, there are guidelines which if followed they will allow for it to continue. The guidelines according to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, include having a curriculum that tallies with a formal school system, there must be a provision for Almajiri in terms of their full shelter, foods, clothing and all other necessary livelihoods.

Meanwhile, in a recent development, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has said he won’t expel almajiris from the State. Matawalle said he would welcome almajiris from other States with open arms.

Matawalle disclosed that the decision was aimed at giving the children a sense of belonging and reduce the stigmatisation meted on the Almajiri Islamic teaching and learning in Nigeria.
