Breaking: Court Grants Order Releasing Dethroned Emir Sanusi Of Kano

Sanusi

The Court has granted an interim order releasing deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi from confinement/detention.

Naija News reports the order was granted on Friday, 13th March 2020 by Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He ordered the immediate release of dethroned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from confinement/detention.

It will be recalled the Emir was dethroned on Monday, 9th March by the Kano State government under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and was subsequently banished to Nasarawa State where he has reportedly been in confinement.

However, ruling on Friday in an ex-parte motion brought before the court by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Sanusi’s counsel, the Judge ordered the dethroned Emir to be set free.

The order, made interim, is directed at the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Attorney General of Kano State and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) – who are all named as respondents in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on March 12, 2020 by Sanusi.

Justice Chikere, in the ruling, said: “An interim order of this honourable court releasing the applicant from the detention and or confinement of the respondents and restoring the applicant’s rights to human dignity, personal liberty, freedom of association and movement in Nigeria, (apart from Kano State) pending the hearing and determination of the applicant’s originating summons.”

Sanusi is, by the substantive suit, challenging his purported banishment to a community in Nasarawa State, arguing that such restriction violated his constitutionaly guaranteed rights.
