A Californian policeman accused of having caressed the chest of a dead woman is under investigation, the Los Angeles police department confirmed on Wednesday.
“An administrative investigation has been launched,” said Chris Ramirez, Los Angeles police spokesman, without giving further details.
An official, close to the case, explained on condition of anonymity that the accused policeman and his teammate had intervened after the discovery of a woman died in an apartment.
Once his death was established by the agents, one of them left the room where the body was.
“The accused returned to where the dead woman was and caressed her chest,” the source added.
Although the agent turned off its on-board camera, the camera continued to rotate for two minutes and allowed the images to be recorded.
It was during a routine inspection that they were discovered.
The Los Angeles Police Union in a statement described the act as “extremely disturbing”.
If they were confirmed, such behaviour would be “not only be immoral, but extremely disturbing and not representative of values, such as respect for the dead, that we, police officers, cherish,” added the union.
The offending officer was laid off as a precaution pending the outcome of the investigation.
