Kim Jong-un Admits His Country Is Going Through “A Serious” Economic Situation

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has warned key leaders of the (ruling) Workers’ Party that his country is in “dire economic condition” and called for emergency measures to remediate.

His remarks, reported Monday by official media, come as a plenary session of the party opened on Saturday, a few days before the expiration of the ultimatum issued for the end of the year by Pyongyang in Washington.

In the absence of progress in their discussions on the North Korean nuclear program, Kim Jong-un promised a “Christmas present”.

The North Korean leader, who chairs this session, said that the time had come to give “a decisive turning point” to the economic development of his country.

He presented to the leaders thus gathered “tasks” to be accomplished “in order to urgently correct the serious situation facing the main industrial sectors of the national economy,” the official North Korean agency KCNA reported on Monday.

North Korea never publishes economic statistics, the only figures available for its financial results come from abroad.

In July, the South Korean Central Bank estimated that the growth of the country’s economy, subject to international sanctions, fell by 4.1% in 2018, the largest contraction since the devastating famine in the 1990s.

After a rapprochement in 2018, negotiations on the North Korean nuclear program have been deadlocked since the failure of the Hanoi summit in February between Kim and US President Donald Trump.
