What Genevieve Nnaji Said After Lionheart Was Disqualified From Oscars

Genevieve Nnaji Reacts To Lionheart’s Disqualification From Oscars

Genevieve Nnaji, the director of the Lionheart movie has reacted to the decision by the awarding academy to disqualify her movie from the Oscar race in the Best International Feature Film category.

As previously reported by Naija News, the movie was rejected because it violates an Academy rule that entries in the category must have “a predominantly non-English dialogue track.”

The organizers are of the opinion that the movie was produced predominantly in English which makes it ineligible to compete.

However, in her reaction, Nnaji submitted on her verified Twitter account that the Academy shouldn’t have disqualified the movie. She said:

“I am the director of Lionheart. This movie represents the way we speak as Nigerians. This includes English which acts as a bridge between the 500+ languages spoken in our country; thereby making us #OneNigeria. @TheAcademy”

“It’s no different to how French connects communities in former French colonies. We did not choose who colonized us. As ever, this film and many like it, is proudly Nigerian.
@TheAcademy”
