1. Senator Abdullahi Speaks On Why Hate Speech Bill Should Become Law
The Senator representing Niger North senatorial district, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has revealed why the hate speech bill should be signed into law in Nigeria.
The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate noted that if the bill is signed into law it would address the dangers of violence in Nigeria steered by hate speech.
2. MPC Retains Interest Rate To Accelerate GDP Growth
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has left the benchmark Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) and other monetary policy tools unchanged to spur economic growth in the fourth quarter of the year.
Naija News reports that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele who disclosed this decision on Tuesday during a press conference at the end of a two-day MPC meeting revealed that the committee unanimously voted to retain the MPR, after the rates were reduced from 14 percent to 13.5 percent in March 2019.
3. FUTA Expels Six Students Involved In Bullying Colleague In Viral Video
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has expelled six students over the bullying of a fellow student.
Naija News recalls that the expelled students stormed one of the off-campus hostels where the victim was resident, attacked her and stripped her half-naked and also recorded the incidents with phones.
4. $1 Scam: EFCC Arrests’ Kirikiri’s Comptroller
Emmanuel Oluwaniyi, the controller of Kirikiri Maximum Prison, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his role in allowing Hope Aroke, a convicted internet fraudster, to receive treatment outside the prison, where he is serving a 24-year jail term.
The commission had accused Aroke, also known as “H.Money”, of masterminding a mega scam to the tune of over $1 million from prison, saying that he used a network of accomplices.
5. Court Approves SERAP’s Right To Sue Buhari, NASS
Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has accepted the plea of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in a suit against President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila “over the failure to disclose details of allocations, disbursement and spending of an estimated N241.2 billion yearly as security votes between 1999 and 2019.
Giving the approval and his verdict on the suit field, Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed ruled that hearing notices be issued and served on all the respondents within 8 days.
6. President Buhari Meets Dutch PM, Rutte
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met with the Prime Minister of Netherlands, Mark Rutte, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
PM Rutte arrived at the Forecourt of the Villa by 11.02 am and was received by Buhari in a brief ceremony.
7. Why Nigerian Borders Will Remain Closed – Lai Mohammed
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has revealed that Nigeria’s land borders will remain closed until there is a noticeable improvement in the security of the country.
Alhaji Lai who made this known during a visit to Seme yesterday in the company of Minister of Interior Affairs, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola revealed that the border closure has increased patronage of Nigerian rice and farmers are expanding their farms as well as engaging more hands.
8. FG Opens Sexual Offenders’ Register To Report Rape, Other Issues
The Federal Government of Nigeria on Monday unveiled the sexual offender register for victims and the general public to report sexual offences.
The register which will contain the names and pictures of persons convicted of sexual offences in the country is part of moves to curb sexual abuse in Nigeria, Naija News understands.
9. Sowore: Why Court May Order Arrest Of DSS DG, Bichi
Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the federal high court in Abuja has threatened to jail Yusuf Bichi, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Naija News reports that the judge gave the warning on Monday over the continued detention of the #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare, an activist.
10. Jonathan Breaks Silence On Working For APC During Bayelsa Election
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to the barrage of accusations that he worked for the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the last Bayelsa governorship election.
