1. Senate Approves Increase In VAT From 5% To 7.5%

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday, approved the request from President Muhammadu Buhari to increase Value Added Tax (VAT) to 7.5%.

The approval is part of the general amendments in the Finance Bill which seeks to amend seven Acts of the National Assembly relating to taxes payable in the country.

2. High Court Sacks Kano Emirs Installed By Ganduje

The High Court in Kano has on Thursday declared illegal the four emirate councils newly created by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Presiding Judge, Justice Usman N’aaba in nullifying the councils, held that the appointment of the four new Emirs, was illegal as the governor and state assembly failed to follow due process in the creation of the Emirates.

3. INEC Fixes Date For Kogi West Supplementary Re-run Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, November 30, for the conduct of the Kogi West supplementary rerun election.

Naija News reports that the electoral umpire fixed the date for the election in a statement issued on Thursday evening in Abuja by Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee.

4. Amnesty International Accuses President Buhari Of Intimidating Nigerians

President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has been accused by the Amnesty International of using the security agents and the judiciary to persecute Nigerians.

The human right group stated this while condemning the continued detention of the covener of RevolutionNow movement Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Services.

5. Court Approves Final Forfeiture Of N280M Linked To Invictus Obi

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State has ordered Obinwanne Okeke, popularly known as Invictus Obi to finally forfeit to the Federal Government, the sum of N280,555,010 traced to him.

The order was given on Thursday by Justice Rilwan Aikawa following the submissions of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo.

6. Gunmen Attack Oyo Commissioner, Kill Driver

The Commissioner for lands in Oyo State, Abdulraheem Abiodun, was on Wednesday attacked by gunmen which led to the death of his driver.

According to Channels Television, the incident happened after the crew dropped off the commissioner at his residence.

7. Hate Speech Bill: Nigeria Governors Forum State Position

The National Assembly has been advised by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to hear public view on the hate speech bill so that it will ensure that the views of Nigerians were captured in the passage of the bill.

The Vice-Chairman of the forum, Aminu Tambuwal, stated this while speaking with newsmen at the end of the meeting with Nigeria Governors on Wednesday, in Abuja.

8. FG To Borrow 500m Euros For Job Creation And Industrialization

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved plans by the federal government of Nigeria to borrow a whopping sum of 500 million Euros.

The Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba made the disclosure at the end of the FEC meeting on Wednesday in Abuja which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

9. Social Media Bill Not Targeted At Online News Platforms – Senate Spokesperson

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Godiya Akwashiki, has noted that the social media bill which has passed the second reading is not against the media.

Senator Akwashiki stated that the bill targeted at “regulating the activities of social media, people that are interested in posting things and to make sure you don’t post things that will harm your neighbour. It is not targeted at New Media”.

10. Constituency Projects: Senators Slam Buhari, Blame Ministers

Some Nigerian Senators have responded to claims by President Muhammadu Buhari on the mismanagement of funds meant for constituency projects.

It will be recalled that the President on Tuesday, said about N1 trillion had been spent on constituency projects in the last 10 years without anything to show for it.
