El-Zakzaky: Confusion As Police Reportedly Shoot At Shiites Protesters

The Nigeria Police on Wednesday fired shots at members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shiites who were protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

The incident which caused confusion among residents left a schoolgirl with gunshot injuries.

It was gathered that two journalists were also arrested by security agents for covering the protest.

Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, ASP Miriam Yusuf, said 12 members of the Islamic movement were arrested.

She, however, denied the shooting of a schoolgirl by policemen.

“We have 12 members of the proscribed IMN who participated in the illegal protest in our custody. Two journalists who were arrested were later released, but it is not true that a girl was shot,” she said.

The sect members had been demanding the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife who had been in custody since 2015.

Naija News reports that despite various court orders granting bail to the IMN leader, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government have refused to obey them.
