The Borno South Concerned Elders (BSCE) has confirmed the revelation by Senator Ali Ndume (APC-Borno South) that at least 847 soldiers killed by Boko Haram were buried at the military cemetery in the state.
The Borno elders made this known in a statement on Sunday by its chairman, Alhaji Yakubu Kwanyang.
The BSCE, however, rejected claims by the Amnesty International that the Nigerian Army conducted a secret mass burial for soldiers.
Kwanyang said, “The revelation of the figure of the slain heroes cannot be said to diminish our profound appreciation of their invaluable service to our fatherland. Instead, it is to prick the conscience of his(Ndume) colleagues in the chambers to respond positively by way of budgetary appropriation at the appropriate time.”
Naija News recalls that Ndume had disclosed that 840 Nigerian soldiers killed by Boko Haram terrorists from 2013 till date were buried in the Military cemetery located in Maiduguri.
The former Senate Leader said the figure did not include soldiers killed by Boko Haram and buried in other military cemeteries located in other parts of the North-East.
Ndume, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, denied reports of mass burial of soldiers killed by the terrorists.
He said the Senate panel was already investigating allegations that some non-governmental agencies were providing useful information to the Boko Haram leaders.
