At least 70 shops with goods worth millions of Nairas have been burnt to ashes as an inferno attacked the Yan’Katako Market in Rijayar Lemo area of Kano state.
Naija News reports that the state fire service confirmed that the incident happened during the early hours of Thursday, February 7.
The Spokesman of the State Fire Service in the state, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed who confirmed the incident, detailed that 30 of the shops were completely razed down while 40 were slightly burnt.
“We received a distress call in the early hours of Thursday at about 03:45am from one Bashir Suleiman that there was fire outbreak at the market.
“On receiving the information, we quickly sent some of our personnel and fire fighting vehicles to the scene of the incident at around 03:52am to quench the fire so as not to affect other shops,” he said.
While Mohammed revealed that investigations are still underway to ascertain the cause of the inferno, he urged the traders in the market to be more conscious and keep fire buckets, blankets and extinguishers that would enable them to curtail such incidents before calling on the fire service.
The incident in Kano state is happening on the same day that a gas explosion injured several people, trapped hundreds of persons and killed at least five persons in South Africa.
