The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will on Thursday meet as part of efforts to resolve the issues that led to the lingering strike in universities.
The president of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, said at the end of their last meeting with the Federal Government they agreed to resume talks today.
He said ASUU leaders at the end of the meeting agreed to meet with their members to discuss the Federal Government’s new position on the union’s demands before taking a position on the FG’s offers.
Speaking on Thursday’s meeting, the acting Director of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Iliya Rhoda, stated that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, would preside over the meeting.
The statement said, “Furtherance to efforts at resolving the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, is scheduled to hold a conciliatory meeting with the executive of ASUU.”
Naija News had reported that ASUU on Tuesday conducted a nationwide referendum to determine whether to suspend its three-month strike or not.
The national leaders of the body directed its zonal coordinators on Monday to meet and conduct the referendum.
It was gathered that over 200 members of the University of Ibadan chapter, who attended the Congress allegedly voted for the continuation of the strike while a little above 50 voted for the suspension of the strike.
