1. Buhari hands over 2019 campaigns to Tinubu
The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has been chosen to lead the party’s campaigns for the February general elections in place of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the Chairman of the APC Campaign Council.
This decision was arrived at by President Buhari while inaugurating the campaign council as according to him, he didn’t want governance to suffer because of elections.
2. Court nullifies APC primaries in Rivers state
A Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, nullified the direct and indirect primary elections conducted by two factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state.
Delivering judgment, Justice Kolawole Omotosho, said both factions of the APC acted in disrespect of a pending suit before a Port Harcourt High Court.
3. Labour organizes massive nationwide protest over minimum wage
The organized labour in Nigeria has declared Tuesday, 8th January as a day of protest over the failure of government to implement the new minimum wage for workers.
Labour said it is doing this to exploit all openings before embarking on strike should government fail to meet its demand.
4. Buhari will only support APC candidates in Ogun state
Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media has revealed what may be the outcome of Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun and the state governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Abdulkadir Adekunle Akinlade’s visit to the Presidential Villa On Sunday.
In a statement released after their visit, Garba Shehu noted that President Buhari will not support Adekunle Akinlade, preferred governorship candidate of Ibikunle Amosun against the APC recognized candidate.
5. Governor Umahi alleges plan by IPOB to kidnap and kill some governors
The governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, has alleged that some members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) have plans to kidnap five Southeast governors.
The Governor further alleged that the plan of the Biafra fighters is to kill themselves and their kidnapped victims after they may have collected ransom.
6. Army reveals why it invaded Daily Trust office
The Nigerian Army has acknowledged that it invaded offices of Daily Trust Newspapers In Borno State and Abuja and arrested its men for questioning.
In a statement by its spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the Nigerian Army admitted storming the said offices to invite the organisation’s journalists responsible for the publication of a classified military operation plans.
7. FG and ASUU reach agreement on strike
The Federal Government on Monday reached an agreement with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made this known after a meeting with the union in Abuja, said the majority of their demands have been met, including the release of N15.4 billion for payment of salary shortfalls.
8. Amaechi reacts to audio recordings on ‘mocking’ President Buhari
Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says the audio recordings of him purportedly mocking President Muhammadu Buhari is fake and was doctored from an unknown journalist.
Reacting to the recordings in a statement issued by his media aide, Israel Ibeleme, the minister said the audio recordings were not only doctored but was done by “some group of boys” paid to “destroy” his image.
9. Governor Shetima breaks down in tears over Boko Haram attacks
Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state broke down in tears on Monday as a delegation of leaders from the state visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.
Shettima was in tears over the recent setback in the fight against insurgency in Nigeria’s Northeast region.
10. Attempted military coup fails in Gabon
A section of the military in oil rich West African country of Gabon, yesterday, attempted to take over government in a coup against President Bongo.
Government however said the coup failed and some of those who planned and executed the failed government take over have been arrested.
