Why Buhari May Not Attend Presidential Debate
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday gave reasons why its 2019 presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari may not attend any presidential debate.
According to the ruling party, there is nothing special in the presidential debate, as there are many other ways Nigerians can be engaged on media.
Naija News recalls Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other candidates, attended the NEDG/BON vice presidential debate which held in December last year and the presidential debate for President Muhammadu Buhari and candidates of other parties for the 2019 election, is scheduled to hold on Saturday, January 19.
However, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the APC National Publicity Secretary, said the party will look at several options through which President Buhari will engage Nigerians, adding that there is no big deal if it believes debate is not one of such means.
“What is special about presidential debate? Presidential debate is one of the several platforms for presidential candidates to engage with the public”.
“As a party, we will look at all the options and pick the ones that we can accommodate and those that will be impactful and effective in achieving our goals. We will be the ones to determine that. If presidential debate happens to be one of that, fine.
“If it wasn’t, then it is no big deal. There is nothing special about any debate. It is just one of the several platforms to engage the electorate”, he said in an interview with Independent.
Similarly, Prince Tony Momoh, a former Minister of Information, and chieftain of the APC, said President Buhari is not afraid of debate, saying he attended past debates held from the 2003 presidential election until now.
