Minimum Wage: President Buhari In Meeting With All State Governors

Expanded NEC Meeting Holds In Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently meeting with state governors from the 36 states of the federation in an expanded National Executive Council Meeting.

Recall Naija News had earlier reported that state governors under the auspices of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) had decided after their meeting on Thursday, to hold another meeting with the President over the issue of new minimum wage.

The meeting with the President, which is holding at the council chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, started at about 12:40 p.m.

The meeting is aimed at discussing a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

A presidential committee set up by the government under the leadership of a former Head of Service of the Federation, Ama Pepple, had recommended that the new minimum wage should be increased from the current N18,000.

The committee has not officially released the figure agreed upon, saying the President would reveal the figure after considering the report.

The organized labour are holding out for N30, 000 as the new wage, while state governors want to pay N22, 500 and the federal government is proposing N24,000.

Naija News report members of the organized labour have insisted they won’t accept anything less than N30,000 while the state governors have said they can’t afford N30,000 new minimum wage without sacking workers.

The recommendation of the tripartite committee that worked on the minimum wage has been submitted to the President who in turn said he needs to study the report before forwarding same to the National Assembly for further action.
