Governors Set Up Another Meeting With President Buhari
State governors under the auspices of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) have decided to hold another meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari again over the issue of new minimum wage.
The decision was reached on Thursday after their meeting in Abuja which was presided over by the chairman of Forum and Governor of Zamafara State, Abdulaziz Yari.
Governor Yari, however, declined speaking with journalists at the end of the meeting.
But the Head, Media and Public Affairs of the NGF, Mr Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, who addressed newsmen at the end of the meeting, revealed the governors resolved to meet the president on Friday.
“It was a very short meeting, of course the very last one for the year, the meeting welcomed the newest governor in its midst, the Osun state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola.
“The meeting resolved to meet the president on the issue of the minimum wage which hopefully will be resolved before the end of the year.
“The governors are also meeting the president tomorrow to thank him for the way he has handle the economy,” Barkindo said.
Naija News recalls the organized labour had after rounds of negotiations with the new minimum wage committee, settled for a N30,000 figure as the new minimum wage.
The state governors however insisted they can’t pay N30,000 without sacking workers and have put forward a figure of N22,500 while the federal government wants to pay N24,000.
Labour has however threatened to proceed on indefinite strike should government decide to pay anything less than the N30,000.
The exact figure adopted by the Tripartite Committee which worked on the new minimum wage is yet to be officially disclosed although it is reportedly the N30,000 labour is insisting on.
The governors are however pushing for a downward review of the figure while President Buhari has disclosed that he needs to study the content of the report before forwarding it to the National Assembly for further action.
Some of the governors at the meeting according to NAN were Edo, Lagos, Osun, Kaduna, Kwara, Kano, Plateau, Kebbi and Gombe States.
The governors of Bauchi, Benue, Adamawa, Rivers and Nasarawa were represented by their deputies.
