2019: INEC Deny Making Plans For IDPs Outside Nigeria To Vote

INEC Speaks On Voting By IDPs In 2019

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has responded to claims in certain sections of the media that internally displaced persons outside Nigeria would vote in 2019 general elections.

The electoral body clarified that no diaspora or out-of-country voting will be conducted for any Nigerian.

The statement however confirmed that Nigerian IDP’s living within the country, but are registered to vote in other states other than their states of origin, would be able to vote in the presidential election.

The clarification is contained in a statement issued on Thursday, signed and made available to Naija News by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and chairman information and voter education.

Recently, as published by Naija News, recall INEC also disclosed that it would follow existing laws in conducting the 2019 general elections, stressing that it would not be caught in the line of battle between the executive and the legislators over amendments to the electoral bill which President Muhammadu Buhari has for the fourth time refused to sign.

The President said it was too close to the 2019 elections to effect such changes so as not to cause ambiguity in the conduct of the elections.

He urged the lawmakers to include a clause that the amendments would only come into effect after the 2019 general elections.
